- Aquatics Supervisor & Officer of Training and Development, Student RecWell Council
Recreation and Wellness Services is proud to highlight Meg Wallace, an Aquatics Supervisor, lifeguard, swim instructor, and Officer of Training and Development with Student RecWell Council. Her passion for growth, leadership, and service shines through every position she takes.
In her role as an Aquatics Supervisor, Meg oversees daily aquatic operations while teaching private group lessons. As a certified Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), she helped prepare the next generation of aquatic staff, as she is qualified to teach lifeguarding courses. Meg shares that her most rewarding experiences have been working with a child in private swim lessons who began at Level 1 and has now progressed to Level 4. Seeing the growth of a student firsthand has been vastly affirming and reminds her of the impact she can have on individuals as a staff member.
Aside from her Aquatics involvement, Meg has also stepped up as an employee through her role in SRC. She helps ease New Hire Orientations and leads training and development initiatives. She has also joined a mentorship program in the SRC so that new hires can be supported as they transition into RecWell. She remembers what it felt like to be a first-year student herself, and Meg strives to make that experience easier for new employees by creating a welcoming and supportive environment. From her overall experience, she recommends that new hires try new things and find out what theyre capable of. Meg highlights collaboration with other staff members to make these programs effective for all RecWell employees.
Meg has contributed to youth programming through Splashes, the youth swim league at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. With two years of coaching, she has prepared swimmers for competitions at local schools. While the league is smaller than most, Meg shared the joy of seeing the athletes improve throughout multiple seasons and gain confidence in their abilities. We may not be the best, but I enjoyed seeing them all improve over time.
Her experiences at RecWell have proven to align closely with her future goals in medicine. Meg has taken part in the AHEC Scholars Program in Akron, where she worked with the health centers serving students interested in medical careers like her own. There, explore anatomy labs, physical exams, and discussions about healthcare access in underserved areas. Being a part of the RecWell, working with people daily while building interpersonal skills for her future career, has helped Meg grow more comfortable asking for help, communicating effectively, and supporting those around her.
Meg credits a lot of her growth at RecWell to the support shes received from her supervisors, particularly Jeff, who exemplifies dedication to his staff. I have been given many opportunities, Meg says, mentioning her mentorship program, and I aspire to be as helpful as he has been.
Fun fact: Meg can play 15 instruments and is a proud parent to two cats!
